In 2000, Dirk borrowed a shed from a friend and began filling it with tools he couldn’t afford, and scavenged “junk” he couldn’t pass up. Junk, he found in long-forgotten basements and attics, at thrift stores and yard sales, or on the side of the road. As word of his creations got out, a local retailer commissioned Dirk to design and create a line of jewelry and clothing displays. The junk serving as his raw materials. The success of his displays led to additional requests for window dressings, coffee tables, bars, cash wraps, even a dream tree-house.
Today, Dirk and his assistants work out of a 4,000 square foot, nicely equipped wood shop, with an additional acre of outside storage dedicated to his junk. While the junk pile has continued to grow, so too has the number, and diversity, of requests-- additional retail displays, cabinets, tables, beds, custom doors, media and entertainment consoles, lighting, and more. To keep pace with demand, and to nurture their passion for the preservation and re-use of old growth trees, Dirk and his brother Keith started re:wood, a business dedicated to recycling and re-purposing the beautiful antique wood of old unused barns, 100+ year old homes, industrial buildings, antique furniture past repair, and, most recently, retired pickle barrels.
